We all have an innate sense of what a "man" or a "woman" should look, act, behave...since the gay man cannot fully feel the sense that he is man enough, he longs to some "ideal" or any "symbolic" representation on what a man should be.
Today, you can see a lot of gay men trying to achieve this by overcompensating - working out in a gym to build muscles (some even take illegal steroids), or dress ruggedly in leather, grow moustache or chest hair, have tattoes or piercings in different parts fo the body, or practice some manly swagger or learn manly talk ... however, no matter how you change the external, the internal dilemma remains - I don't feel man enough.
Also do understand that a lot of straight men don't fall into the male stereotype - most have beer bellies not six-pack abs, most are heavy-weight or lanky not the runway model you see on billboards, some talk with a shrill voice not the marlboro guy you see on TV, some appear to be refined in his manners ... however they know that deep inside without question or doubt that they are men...
I think it is important for us not too focus too much on the externals... masculinity is internal and as we grow in character that God designed us to be as men, then we grow into the men that He intend us to be. I hope this helps
